When a person passes away abroad leaving assets in Greece, the inheritance procedure often requires the publication of their will under Greek law.

In the case of a handwritten will, Greek law now provides that, where the holder of the will resides abroad, the will may be submitted for publication either through the competent procedure in Greece or directly before the Head of the competent Greek Consular Authority abroad.

Following the publication of the will, the heirs may then proceed with the acceptance of inheritance in Greece through their Greek lawyer.

This is a useful option for foreign heirs, as it may simplify the first step of the inheritance process where the deceased or the heirs are based outside Greece.
